Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 6:44 PMSo I posted your subject line ("too bad this kind of stupidity...") into the response box for that listing. And the poster (Craig) didn't like that very much. -

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 6:47 PMIn fact, here's his response:
"Your nasty, crude, and meaningless comments in response to my recent blog post and listing on effective alternative healing modalities clearly depict how angry you really are. Next time, take a moment to address the source of your own deeply-seated hatred of yourself before projecting it onto others. Oh, and thanks for your comment--your non-coherent and childish actions give that much more credence to the necessity of global and individual cleansing (physical, mental, emotional, and etheric). All the best to you, Mickey. I hope you are feeling better really soon. "
And he left that response as a comment to this photo of mine:
people.tribe.net/mickd/pho...fe3bce7988
Apparently I was at least somewhat coherent. -

Fri, November 6, 2009 - 8:53 PMOh, mercy -- thanks for the laugh!
I'd like to waterboard that guy in ayahuasca.

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 11:45 PMWTF is an "etheric" cleansing? (And "global" vs. "individual"?) Huh?
Incoherent pot calling a kettle black... -

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 11:51 PMAnd if I may mix in a couple of more metaphorical cliches:
Poking this hornet's nest is like shooting fish in a barrel. (Getting a huffy response like that is as easy as falling off a log.)
(I'll be here all week.) -

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 12:00 AM-> "All the best to you, Mickey. I hope you are feeling better really soon."
This so reminds me of the LA half of the old joke about the difference between LA (major contender for world capitol of woo) and NYC:
In LA they say "have a nice day" but they're thinking "fuck you"; in NY they say "fuck you", but they're thinking "have a nice day".
(Needless to say, philosophically I'm a New Yorker.)

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 6:56 AMSounds like his "alternative healing modality" cleanses away any sense of humor too. Maybe this is what happens when you're not allowed to watch cartoons as a child? -

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 9:04 AMI'm tempted to respond, "I take no shame in advocating for science over 'woo.'" But I'll leave that to others... -

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 11:05 AMMy quick read on this guy is that he expects people follow or possibly obey whatever he says. He probably tells anyone who questions him that they must be sick and tries to put people on the defensive for daring to question his "authority." This guy needs some opposition. -

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 12:16 PMI agree. What would you suggest? -

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 12:49 PMMaybe posting some links about vaccines such as this one antiantivax.flurf.net/
on any of the tribes he is advertising. -

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 1:15 PMYeah. Or any of the links we've shared in the past year or so. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Tue, November 10, 2009 - 11:47 AMI'm glad you guys brought this to light, he needs to get some backlash for this crap. It's a public forum but it seems one side always capitalizes on it.
I sent this to him, hopefully he'll comment on some of my photos:
Of course the thrust of this message is to instill fear and sell supplements. Disingenuous and dangerous I'd say!

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 12:14 PMjeremy - Almost all fearmongering about medicine is mainly a means of marketing supplements. It's amazing just how many wacky (and dangerous and insane) people are involved in pushing supplements - from General Stubblebine (yes, of The Men Who Stare At Goats infamy, check out www.healthfreedomusa.com) to Scientologist chiropractors, the further you dig the weirder it gets! -

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 12:28 PMI have half a mind to get into one of the tribes that listing is posted to, perhaps one with an inactive mod, and shining a little light on the dynamic at play. -

You're playing with an unfair advantage, if you have half a mind, that's still twice as much as your opponents have! ;) Wah wah waaaahhhhh...

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 12:35 PMoh yes, I also love, after all of the fear mongering, how alternative modalities never seem to have a side effect if over used. As if all alternative medicine is happy bunnies and healing with no chance of overdose. I just had a protracted battle on another forum with a guy "looking into" the 528hz healing frequency of love. Never heard of it before then, but a lot of these quacks that claim geneticists are using the 528hz freq to repair damaged DNA also quote Carl Sagan!!! Unbelievable, talk about no context when quoting the inspiration of most modern skeptical movements. After a measured debate where I never gave an inch and presented rational arguments all the while the other guy tried to mischaracterize me as a cynic, rationality won out and he actually came back and admitted he had been had. I was pretty impressed by his humility, but more impressed that I actually got somewhere!
So absolutely Mickey, invade away! -

A few years after Sagan died a woo woo told me that just before he passed away Sagan said that he was wrong and there there was something to astrology. I showed them that his wife who was with him to the end had said otherwise and that she was aware that people would lie about things he said in his final days and hours. He told me with a straight face that Ann Druyan was probably lying.
Most of these people will never admit to being wrong about anything. The ones who make a buck off of woo like the clown mentioned at the top of this thread are some of the most despicable and dishonorable people you would ever want to meet.

Re: too bad this kind of stupidity doesn't merely pose a threat to those who hold it
Wed, November 11, 2009 - 5:41 AMjeremy - I'm impressed by both that guy's ability to admit he was wrong and your ability to stay the course and be even-handed and rational enough to get through. There are plenty of "skeptics" who aren't humble enough to admit they were misinformed too, it's not just woo types. Life can be hard (as much as it can also be beautiful) and acknowledging reality can often mean accepting some unpleasant aspects about our world and societies and then either doing something about them or becoming cynical and exploitative ourselves. There are, of course, other options but these seem to be the two main directions accepting certain realities lead towards. That's why people mischaracterize being a realist as being a cynic - they can't imagine accepting the ugly truths and still being able to experience the beautiful things about life. It's as if they believe that love and joy are so fragile that they can only exist in a bubble - or that love and joy aren't part of the natural world (stupid religious ideas!). Authentic love and joy, grounded in the real world, are much more robust than the fake version (fake love and joy ARE very fragile since they're not real in the first place!) -
